Field Course in Medicinal plant/Ethnobotany of North America
This course teaches students how to positively field identify, extract and prepare native medicinal plants from the temperate zone of North America to cure common ailments such as head aches, colds, depression, etc. You will learn how to field identify up to 80 - 120 vascular plants, including what parts of the plants to use and how to use them with the aid of an expert in field botany, medicinal plants and ethnobotany who has lived with indigenous people firsthand. The knowledge of the Chocoi of Panama and Tharu people of the southern Terai region of Nepal was passed down to us so that we may teach it to others. This field course offers a high level of practical hands-on learning, 1-1 instruction from a qualified instructor and is an excellent choice for those considering moving into a career as a registered herbal medicinalists, practioner of herbal medicine, ethnobotanist, traditional healer or holistic medicine.
The material covered in the course is equivalent to an upper level field course. There are no formal prerequisites for the course, but a strong interest in ethnobotany/medicinal plants, general knowledge of ecology and biology would definitely be a plus in the student's ability to benefit from the course.
Students will be expected to work hard, but we also intend to provide students with a fun experience. While at field sites and natural areas, located in southern Ontario, Canada, students will have the opportunity to explore natural areas known to harbour a high biodiversity of medicinal plants. Students will also contribute to a much needed database on the medicinal properties of local medicinal plants.
The following topics will be explored;
..........Taxonomy and identification of vascular plants
..........Collection and field identification of medicinal plants
