As a result of over 30 years of practical botanical experience, Dave Jolly, Senior Instructor of the EARTHQUEST Biological Field School, has produced his unique photo field guide book on the Asters and Goldenrods of Ontario. This book contains over 200 full colour photographs of 17 species of asters and 17 species of goldenrods (2 varieties), including 6 Ontario Species at Risk (SAR) and 1 confusing look-a-like. Detailed technical differences and similarities between these plants along with Ecological Land Classification ecosite types, habitat, distribution, status (endangered, threatened, special concern, provincial and regional rank, etc.), distribution maps, confusing species which may be easily misidentified - eg. Sharp leaved goldenrod (Solidago arguta) vs. Rough leaved goldenrod (Solidago patula), spring, summer, fall and winter photos of leaves, flowers, involucre bracts, disk florets as well as seasonal flowering dates. All of this information is presented on a minimum of 2 pages for each plant, with an index set up in the format of a binomial key based on flower colour, leaf shape and/or veination and habitat type.
