International Field Biology Training (FBT) Program
International FBT Courses

This is one of our newest courses offered to meet the shortage in the environmental industry of well qualified people who can visually field identify any grass, sedge or rush plant from family, genus to species level in 5 seconds or less. The course will introduce you to approximately the Grass, Sedge and Rush families which are grouped together by visual traits such as shape of the inflorescence, stem shape, etc. Within the families you will learn approximately 3 Sedge genera based on habitat, leaf width, shape and location of the male and female flowers, etc., along with up to a dozen Grass genera based on leaf nodes, ligules, enclosed versus open sheaths, shape of inflorescence, glumes, lemma and palea plus habitat. Two of the main Rush genera will be explored along with their taxonomic and morphological similarity to members of the Lily family. Finally, confusing look-a-like Grasses, sedges and rushes which may be easily confused, including Species at Risk will be compared and contrasted so that the student leaves with a wealth of field knowledge, binomial keys, photos and voucher specimens backed up with a number of field site visits to areas known to harbour the widest asortment of grasses, sedges and rushes. We must warn students that these field site visits often venture into tick infested areas, so please be advised that you must take precautions to reduce your chances of contracting Lyme disease. It is recommended that you also enroll in the following courses to enhance your chances of becoming more attractive to employers as these plant courses do show up on many job postings

Level 1 & 2 terrestrial plant courses
Fern course
Level 1 aquatic/wetland course

Level 3 International FBT grass, sedge, rush course - $800.00 CAD

This course focuses on the 3 families; grasses, sedges, rushes commonly found in the eastern half of North America, but these families are also found all over the world. It emphasizes common traits shared among other plant families and how to visually recognize them based on these traits. It is a course that is best taken with other field botany courses offered, including the Species at Risk plant course;

Unit #1: Structure and function of grasses

How grasses have benefited human kind in terms of agriculture, building tools, etc..

Grass family description
Family characteristics and traits

Unit #2: Field diagnostics; grass genera

We will learn how to identify common grass genera based on visual traits and characteristics.

How to identify based on leaf shape, shape of ligules, nodes, sheaths, inflorescence, number of scales, lemma and palea

Unit #3: Rush family

An examination of some of the Rush family

Unit #4: Sedge family

An examination of 3 sedge genera with an introduction to field diagnostics based on inflorescence shape, perigynia shape and size, location of male and female flowers, habitat, etc..
