i. Wood fern
ii. Flowering fern
iii. Marsh fern
iv. Adder's tongue

ii. Rachis; scaly, wooly, etc.,
iii. habitat
iv. reproductive system (ie. walking, bulblet, spores)
v. shape of sporangium

The course is supplemented with a number of field site visits to natural areas which have a high biodiversity of fern species and may be taken via correspondence as it is applicable to any province or territory in Canada, or other countries. It is recommended that you also enroll in the following courses to enhance your chances of becoming more attractive to employers as these plant courses do show up on many job postings

Level 1 & 2 terrestrial plant courses
Grass, sedge, rush course
Level 1 aquatic/wetland course

Level 3 International FBT fern course - $800.00 CAD

This course focuses on the 3 families; grasses, sedges, rushes commonly found in the eastern half of North America, but these families are also found all over the world. It emphasizes common traits shared among other plant families and how to visually recognize them based on these traits. It is a course that is best taken with other field botany courses offered, including the Species at Risk plant course;

Unit #1: Structure and function of ferns

Fern reproductive systems - modes of reproduction and their taxonomic classification as vascular plants

Fern family descriptions
Family characteristics and traits

Unit #2: Field diagnostics; fern genera

We will learn how to identify common fern genera based on visual traits and characteristics.

How to identify based on frond shape, rachis, shape and size of sporangium, etc.

Unit #3: Fern species identification

An examination of some of the fern species found within the 5 forest regions of Canada
